Flying lines for light kites

Long Dyneema-Spectra flying lines on a Z.125™ reel are good at high flights in wind or without wind.

Short flying lines on Microwinder™ are handy when flying without wind, especially with rather small kites in urban environments.

Zero .4 .5 .6 flying lines

The braided Dyneema (a brand of DSM, called Spectra in USA, a Honeywell label) flying lines are produced specifically for our zero wind single line kites. They are not included with our kites, that's why you can choose the appropriate line for your flights. Short lines come on our ultralight Microwinder™, long lines on an asymmetrical z.125 reel, both are designs of the Kite-Lab.

One of the many features of dyneema-spectra: When wet, it's still light and after a brief moment dry again. It's lighter than water.

Interface to your kite

Active synergetic kites are developed for one primary aspect: 3d flying without wind, or with a tiny bit too. For this purpose, we use the braided, stretch-free high-tech Zero.4.5.6 flying lines made of Dyneema. Because of the direct contact to the kite.

You can reach very high altitudes with a Long way home and a Zero.5 line. But a Zero.6 line offers a better handling in flights up to 100 m: It offers a cool grip and as it is stiffer and clearly visible, you can sort the line well on the ground.

Similar for the Urban ninja kite or a Dt superleggera: For very high flights a Zero.4 is the right choice, for playing around attach a Zero.5, and for confined urban flights such as in a courtyard on asphalt, you may use a short Zero.6 line. Light indoor kites, such as Like a rolling stone ul can feel pretty comfortable on short, rather heavy lines too.

Subjective or situational aspects will play a role in choosing the line for a flight. The handling of a heavier flying line will be agreeable in a relaxed low wind flight, while a thin, light string helps to maximize the efficiency of the kite when flying without any wind.

Long or short lines

Short flying lines on Microwinder are handy at flights in the city, indoor or sometimes on stage. Lay out the whole length on the ground, remove the winder from the line and put it into your pocket. This way you won't have problems with the line on the ground.

We love the 20-m-lines on Microwinders. They are so handy that you can often do without a long flying line at all.

Flying with a long line on the reel, lay out something like 40 m well sorted on the ground. Place the spool also on the ground, the handle knob side looking downwards, and take away the line upwards from the reel.

After the flight, hold the spool by the handle and with the other hand, reel the line onto the spool. Doing so, the line is reeled out and in always from the same side, and will not be twisted. Cheap kite lines made of nylon or polyester twist fast and burn your fingers, you get what you pay for.
